As energy bills rise for millions of families in Britain, analysis from the Labour Party has shown that at least 40,314 households in Barking and Dagenham, and 67,505 households in Havering, would benefit from Labour’s proposal to upgrade millions of homes.

As families struggle with record energy bills, Labour would launch a “national mission” to make every home in the country warm, well-insulated, and cheaper to heat within a decade. This national mission would mean upgrading 19 million homes within ten years, and if the Government had implemented this scheme when Labour originally called for it, 2 million of the coldest homes by this winter could have been upgraded by this winter.

As families struggle with spiralling energy bills, new analysis has revealed that Labour’s Warm Homes Plan would save households across Britain over £2bn off their energy bills this winter alone. This includes upgrading thousands of homes in Dagenham & Rainham, producing a saving of over £107m both Barking and Dagenham and Havering overall.

Margaret Mullane, Labour’s PPC for Dagenham & Rainham said: “Like every community in Britain, local people are facing a cost of living crisis with rocketing energy bills. 12 years of failure by the Conservatives to insulate our homes is one of the reasons bills are so high. If the Tories were serious about cutting energy bills, it could start right now, by delivering the Warm Homes Plan that Labour has called for. A proper national mission would save 19 million families over £1,000 on their bills, as well as creating good construction jobs in areas like ours.

“Labour will deliver the Warm Homes Plan families in Dagenham & Rainham need, as part of our Green Prosperity Plan to make Britain a clean energy superpower – delivering lower bills, jobs in the green industries of the future, tackling the climate crisis, and making Britain energy independent once and for all.”

Under the Conservatives, home insulation rates have plummeted, and millions of families are paying more on their energy bills now because of this. The UK has the least energy efficient homes in Europe, and insulations are now a staggering 20 times slower than under the last Labour government.

Labour’s plan will provide security to working families and pensioners, helping to ensure the lights don’t go out and making households less vulnerable to surges in energy prices.

Labour’s plan would also spark job creation for electricians and plumbers across the country; recent research from PwC found that up to 580,000 jobs would be supported annually from building retrofits – with higher levels of energy efficiency requiring more workers. This includes 94,600 trade jobs, with the most in demand being heating engineers and plumbers.
